Who We Are

Rooted in Ubuntu: "I am because we are."

Ubuntu Women's Health and Midwifery Initiative (UWHMI) was founded in 2018 by Grace Komuhangi, a registered midwife with over two decades of clinical and academic experience across Uganda, Germany, the UK, and Finland. The organisation grew from a simple conviction rooted in the philosophy of Ubuntu, that our wellbeing is bound together, and that no woman should face pregnancy, childbirth, or illness alone.

We are a Ugandan organisation, registered as a Company Limited by Guarantee, working at the intersection of clinical care, midwifery education, and health research. Our approach combines hands on service with the generation of evidence that can shape better care, locally and internationally.

Our Vision

A future where every woman and girl in Uganda can access respectful, high quality reproductive and maternal healthcare.

Our Mission

To strengthen women's health through skilled midwifery, community education, capacity building, and research that puts women's voices at its centre.

Our Values

Ubuntu · Dignity · Evidence · Equity · Community Ownership

What We Do

Care, knowledge, and community, together.

Our programmes connect skilled care with education and evidence, so that improvements reach women where they live.

Maternal & Newborn Health

Safe pregnancy and childbirth through skilled midwifery, antenatal and postnatal support, and reliable referral for women in underserved communities.

Midwifery Education

Training and mentoring midwives and community health workers, sharing international best practice, and strengthening the local workforce women depend on.

Women's Health Research

Partnering on multi country studies of heavy menstrual bleeding, iron deficiency anaemia, and reproductive health, so African women's experiences shape global evidence.

Community Education

Raising awareness on menstrual health, family planning, and reproductive rights, breaking stigma and putting knowledge in women's hands.

Our Research

Research with communities, not on them.

UWHMI serves as an academic and community partner in international research collaborations focused on women's health in low resource settings. We contribute community engagement, local expertise, and ethical grounding to multi country studies, ensuring that research is conducted with communities, and that findings translate into real improvements in care.
